Change Of Heart

How can the winner not win?

Yesterday I had posted the petition to declare Arien O'Connell the winner in the Nike Women's Marathon, held in San Francisco on October 19,2008. She did not start with the elite runners, she started with the regular folk, which are two different categories. She beat out the elite runners, but was not declared the winner. According to an article at SF Gate, Nike was bombarded with calls and e-mails to declare O'Connell the winner.

"The annual event is billed as the largest women's marathon in the world with 20,000 entries. O'Connell ran the race in 2 hours, 55 minutes and 11 seconds. The fastest woman in the elite group ran it in about 3 hours, 6 minutes."

The article also states that O'Connell is A winner, not THE winner.

All sorts of weird race stuff going on this weekend at races.

I think that she's THE winner and should be included in the Elite Group from now on. Thanks for sharing this with us and for declaring her the true winner she is.

So, I'm confused, how come she's not the winner??? I mean right is right. Right?

the judds?

i still think nike got it wrong. she won this race fair and square. she raced the clock and finished first. she should be THE winner, not A winner.

In other sports it would be like having two brackets. The only difference would be that the winners in each bracket would have to go up against each other.

Yeah, that was wrong, so very wrong. I'm glad to see that Nike changed it's stance later today.

Shosh,
Yeah, Chicago, Nike, and you! I hope your situation is resolved!

Evelyne,
She is the women's winner. The article did not explain that a man actually came in first with a faster time. Arien actually came in second over all.

Barbie2be,
Winner! I'm glad they gave her the distinction.

MPH,
Each race is a little different and have different categories. I did Nike last year and I found a lot of inadequacies with the race itself, although the experience was good.

AKA Alice,
Me too!
