Sounds of Silence

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Tonight, as I sit here in front of the computer screen, trying to maintain my cool with sugar free cherry flavored Popsicles and oscillating fans, I actually have a *quiet* house. My daughter is out with her boyfriend, my grandson is just about asleep, and my husband and son just left for a weekend fishing trip. It feels weird to have such silence. My house continuously seems busy and noisy from sounds emitted by music off the radio, my daughter talking on the phone, voices and sounds from TV shows, my son playing guitar, the dog barking, my grandson asking many questions, and so on. Tonight, since it's *quiet*, I am made aware of different noises. Periodically, I will hear our cats, as they scamper from room to room in the distance -- jingling the bells on their collars, then the sound of the dog's toenails clicking as she walks across the hardwood floors, and slowly searching through the house for the cats. It's summer, so the crickets are outside chirping . I can also hear the sounds of cars driving on the interstate in the distance. Oh, and I must not neglect to mention the whir of the oscillating fans, which I would be miserable without.

It's amazing how noisy silence is.

I'm feeling a zillion times better today. I had a good run in the neighborhood. At first it didn't feel like it, but based on the pace it was decent, so that was a nice surprise. I also ran a different route and turned off the mile indicator beep on the wireless run tracker. Perhaps ignorance is bliss? Not knowing how far I've actually gone did something mentally? I got out before it became too hot, but the humidity was still there, but it wasn't a factor. For the first time in a long time I enjoyed my run. To celebrate my run, I turned on the sprinklers in the front yard and just stood there, on the lawn, to cool off.

Yesterday my food wasn't all that great. I didn't cheat all that much, a few Nilla Vanilla Wafer Cookies here and there with DGS, but I still felt sluggish all day. I drank a lot of water, hoping that would help the headache situation. Maybe the water helped. Today the food choices are better, so far. I didn't post here yesterday, but I ended up with a headache that wiped me out. I don't get a lot of headaches, though , so I'm hoping it was the weird weather that triggered it. I know some people are blaming everything on the lunar eclipse the other night. Heh.

Have a great Thursday.

Rock 'N' Roll Lifestyle

Bean workout today. More of the same, 6 sets of 12 push ups, side kicks ~ 6 sets of 30 glutes, abs and back extensions.

I haven't run since the half marathon. My weird work schedule has dictated when I can run, plus other daily occurrences. I'm hoping to be back with a more solid run and workout schedule with in the next week or so. Speaking of running... I've just signed up for the 2008 San Diego Rock 'N' Roll Marathon. What can I say? I'm addicted to the Rock 'N' Roll events, plus that's probably the only marathon I'll ever participate in because of the generous finish time, party atmosphere, and music. The only other marathon I'd consider is Boston, but it is more likely that I'd attend and be a spectator rather than participating. I would need to knock about an hour off of my current marathon time to even qualify to run the Boston Marathon, and that is highly unlikely, although not totally impossible. Stranger things have happened.

My brother phoned me last night, just to hear about my trip down memory lane and the services for Mrs. S. He's also wanting me to run with him in a half marathon event at Big Sur/Monterey in November, but that's at the same time as the Silver Strand event. I've known about the Monterey event for a while, and I've gently declined, but he keeps asking. I don't know if I can do another trip north so quickly, especially just a couple of weeks after the Nike Women's half marathon in San Francisco. It's the expense as well, because a month later is my 25th wedding anniversary to my hubbie, and I'm just about certain we're going to fly away somewhere tropical to celebrate. If there were nothing else going on, I'd probably fly up for the Monterey event, because it does sound intriguing to run along the scenic Northern California coast. Maybe next year...

When Irish Eyes Are Smiling

Today I attended an Irish funeral for one of my mother's best friends, Mrs S. The service was beautiful and it was wonderful to see so many people attend. The "weird" thing was seeing all of the faces from years past.

When I was very small, in the 1960's, we lived in a modest neighborhood where everyone knew each other. All of the kids played together, and all of the parents had barbecues and social functions together. Most of the moms stayed home to raise the kids while most of the dad's worked. There was one family who we were very close with, not just in living distance, but relationship wise as well. My siblings and I were about the same ages as their kids. Our parents were best friends, especially our mothers. Mrs S and my mother were practically inseparable. They did sewing projects together, baking, cooking, and most of all... BARGAIN HUNTING. If there was a sale to be shopped at, they were there. Coupons? You bet. At that time, my mother did not drive, so it was easy for her to just walk a couple of blocks to Mrs S' house for a cup of coffee and gossip.

When I was about 9 years old, we out-grew that small house and moved to a new development, to a larger house. It wasn't that far from the old neighborhood, and Mrs. S could drive over to visit my mom, but she really missed being close by. With in a couple of years, the S family moved within 2 blocks of us, on the same street. It was great having them close by again. It was as if nothing had ever changed.

When my mom became sick and was diagnosed with cancer, it was a shock, and especially for Mrs. S. She did keep things "real" for my mom, though, telling her about shopping and bringing her a few things (bought on sale.) After my mother died, we didn't hear too much from Mrs S and the S family, but we would see them every now and then at other social functions, like weddings, and Mrs. S would always say how much she missed my mother.

Today, after the funeral service, we gathered at their house, still two blocks away from where my dad still lives. Many of the old faces were there ~ such as the kids I grew up with who are now grown up and have kids and grand-kids, and some of the neighbors from the old neighborhood who remembered my mom and Mrs. S and their parties. Several people remembered how they would bargain shop, and said if there's a sale in heaven, you know they're both on it. Many faces looked familiar and it took a while to remember the names. Many people did not recognize me, but once they found out it was me, then they went on with stories about my mom and Mrs S. One lady even took a picture of me and my father to send to one of the other neighbors who couldn't attend the reception.

Mrs. S had several recipes that she was known for. One of her grandchildren printed up 3 different recipe cards with Mrs. S' photo on it and the recipe to give out to all of the guests. One of the recipes I do remember fondly. It was her raisin bars. I remember her baking those when I was very small, about 4 or 5 years old. Talk about comfort food. There was nothing like the sweet aroma of her raisin bars baking. Seeing that recipe card was yet another walk down memory lane.

It was sad knowing that Mrs. S had died from emphysema, from years of cigarette smoking, but the reception was full of happy memories of what a fun lady she really was.

I Have Confidence

Workout today - "The Bean"
I did 6 sets of 12 each of the advanced push-ups, side kicks, side kicks with bringing the elbow to the knee, and 6 sets of 30 each of abs and back extensions.

I've decided to keep "The Bean," even if I only use it for back extensions.

It just dawned on me that I have about eight weeks until the Nike Women's Half Marathon in San Francisco, so I printed out an 8 week training schedule from Runnersworld.com's Smart Coach, just so I have some organized plan to follow. I know there will be some tweaks along the way. I have yet to follow a training schedule to the "T." Perhaps I should try sticking to the plan exactly as written for once, and see what happnens...

Hubbie brought home some curtains from a job site of a client who is getting rid of pretty much everything in the house, such as window treatments, fixtures, counter tops, etc. The client has a more modern style, and the house was decorated in more of an antique, French provencial style. These curtains are NOT my style, but they can be reworked into different curtains or other things. My hubbie joked that we could make "play-clothes for the children " so they could go romp around the countryside singing songs, like in "The Sound Of Music."

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
Or, better yet, I could make myself a new gown and be all Scarlet O'Hara-esque, as in "Gone With The Wind."

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

The fabric is a thick, goldish hue, silk jaquard, lined with a layer of white flannel, then another layer of white muslin. These are huge, ceiling to floor, 12 foot curtain panels with fancy pleated detals at the top, plus tassel fringe along the edges. They are very well made and the fabric is actually gorgeous on it's own. I sew, therfore I can taylor them down to be more of what we like. Hubbie just doesn't see the potential and wants to put them up as they are. First of all, we don't have a room with a 12 foot ceiling. Second, the room the curtains might go in has a more contemporary feel to it, and the curtains as they are will not work. I have a feeling I'm on my own with these curtains, but I CAN make them work with what we already have.

Also, on the home decorating front, my daughter is painting her room pink. When she first mentioned that she wanted a pink room, I thought it would be a calm, soft pink. It's not just any pink. It's severe pink... I mean beyond Pepto-Bismol pink. She's doing this at her own expense and time, so if she decides she doesn't like it, she gets to re-paint it. I must say, though, she is doing a great job with the painting. I'll give her points for technique. (This was hard to photograph, because the walls kept showing up purple since I shot this at night. Against thewhite window trim it looks pinker.)

My Stunning Mystery Comparison

THE STABILITY BALL

VS
THE BEAN

I went ahead and did a side by side comparison workout with my stability ball and "The Bean."

Abs crunches- All abs exercises were pretty much the same, as far as execution. The Bean might be good for someone who has balance issues, but other than that, everything was the same. Like with all exercises, if you don't squeeze the muscle/area you're working on, it's not going to do anything.

Glutes exercise - I did the exercise where you lay your back on the bean, with your rear-end as far off the end nook as possible, extend both legs, feet planted firmly on the floor, and push up with both legs, squeezing the butt, then back down again. I was able to do this same exercise with the stability ball. I did like this exercise better on The Bean. I felt like I was too high off the ground with the stability ball.

Push-ups - Knees and calves on both The Bean and stability ball, upper body supported by arms, and hands on the floor for push ups. The Bean made it easier to do this exercise, but I think the easier part is because I was down lower to the floor. It was more challenging to use the Stability ball, and I felt like I got a better exercise with the stability ball.

Back extensions - Flipped the bean over for this one, lay stomach side down, feet on the ground for support, hands behind the head and bring the torso up and back down again. For the stability ball, pretty much the same, but I had to anchor my feet under a piece of furniture to keep my feet down. I liked The Bean for this exercise. It felt like I had better extension.

Side kicks - Again, The Bean flip side over, lean sideways and bring the leg up to the side and back down again. Same with the stability ball. Not a lot of difference, unless balance is an issue.

I did a total of 6 sets of 20 reps for each exercise, alternating between The Bean and the stability ball.

The verdict?
I guess it depends on perception. They come out about equal, seeing how I did prefer The Bean for some exercises and the stability ball for others. One isn't better than the other, they're just different. I haven't tried all the exercises yet, so time will tell. I will, however, keep The Bean in my arsenal of workout equipment.

Morning Has Broken

Here's a few pictures from the America's Finest City Half Marathon on Sunday...

When we arrived at the starting point at the Cabrillo Monument, we witnessed the sun rising from the east, over the Mission Bay...

I need coffee!

Look at the new hardware we've achieved! Cooling down after the end of the run, at Balboa Park. From left to right: Me, Michael (hubbie), Sam, and Sam's friend from work.

Hot Child In The City

Irene M F 48 San Diego CA 02:26:38(Chip) 11:12(pace) 6322 02:29:08(clock) 01:03:23(10k split)

This is the first half marathon where I had to walk. I'm usually able to run the entire way but it was just too humid and people were literally dropping! I've never seen so many EMT's taking care of people at an event before. I was drenched in sweat by mile 3 of the run. I wasn't expecting to PR at this event but I did run in the anticipated range. My best half marathon time is 2:19 and I finished in 2:26. I'm glad I didn't force myself to run the entire way because of seeing way too many people get sick. We saw one guy who we recognized from several of the runs we participate in and he was disoriented and passed out a few times, and this guy usually places in the top spots! We watched the EMT's place him into an ambulance for a ride the hospital. People who have run this event before said that today's weather for this run was rather miserable. I felt OK with my finish, mostly because I finished. I did PR my 10k split for a half marathon, though, and that was a surprise. I lost ground towards the last couple of miles and began walking, where there was a hill we had to go up before the last mile stretch. The hill wasn't actually that bad, it's just that I didn't want to be amongst those who were passing out... My hubbie finished in 3:06 and feels sick to his stomach. I think the heat really got to him. He can usually run a half marathon in about 2:45 - 2:50. I'll post pictures later.

I'm beat!

Hot In The City

SUNDAY
Activity: Run
Date: 08/12/07 08:36 AM
Distance: 7.29 miles
Time: 1:17:44
Speed: 5.6 mph
Pace: 10' 39 min/mile
Calories: 686

I had intended to run about 10 or 11 miles on Sunday but both hubbie and I were both tired from the day before. 7.29 miles for me and about 5.5 miles for him. It was a bit hot and humid. I think I'm fighting off a flu bug because I ached after that run. I'm usually feeling pretty good after I run. I was also really SLOW.

MONDAY
Monday officially began the 4 week "You Are What You Eat Challenge." I started the day off okay with oatmeal and soy protein, but my salad in the home fridge disappeared, so I had to opt for the small burrito and green iced tea at the gas station quickie mart across the street from the office ... Not great but not not as bad as it could have been. I did stay out of the vat of peanut M&M's my boss has in her office and drank plenty of water. Dinner was shredded beef with salsa fresca. Later on some sugar free Popsicles. I haven't figured out my caloric intake on Fitday yet but I know it's probably not where I need it to be... Too high in carbs and fat. The burrito threw everything off. I need more fruit and veggies. It's grocery shopping tomorrow for fresh produce and a few other things for pre-made lunch, and a new Sharpie marker so I can put my name on all of MY stuff in the fridge.

No workout or running on Monday because I did that run on Sunday. I have my half marathon THIS Sunday, 8/19/07, so it's either light workouts or easy running. Besides, work just about wiped me out on Monday. Busy was an understatement.

I wasn't planning to run today but my friend called yesterday and wants to fit in a run today in the afternoon. I don't know if that's going to work out because it's predicted to be HOT today. We'll see what happens.

TODAY
Today, so far, food is on spot, but I've only had breakfast, which was oatmeal and a scoop of soy protein mixed in and coffee. Last night, my hubbie picked up a bag of brown rice, a package of chicken breasts and carrots last night, so at least dinner is a sure thing tonight. I still need to head out to the grocery store for more fresh foods.

"The Bean" arrived yesterday but I didn't have the chance to fumble around with it until today. Like anything else, it's not going to work if you don't use it properly. The exercises are just about the same as what you would do on a stability ball, but without the lack of instability. I did like doing their advanced version of the push-ups, though. Basically, "The Bean" is a useful tool for the terminally uncoordinated, or people who have balance issues. What I need to do is a side by side comparison workout with "The Bean" and my stability ball. I must say, though, it would be easy to fall asleep on "The Bean", whereas you can't really fall asleep on a stability ball...

Sunday is the America's Finest City Half Marathon. The weather here has changed to somewhat more hot and humid than normal, but that could change. I'm hoping the weather will be mild for the event. I'm not expecting to PR at this event. I would just like to finish with a decent time, somewhere between 2:20 and 2:30. My PR for a half marathon event is 2:19, but my half marathon split at this year's SDRNR marathon event was 2:18. I'm still feeling kind of sluggish, though, which is why I'm not looking to PR. I made an appointment to see my chiropractor tomorrow, who I haven't seen in over a month (due to my sporadic work schedule) - and I always look forward to this appointment, and perhaps set up an appointment with my GP next week, just to have all of my bases covered.

Other stuff...
I took a set of "before" pictures for the PDB "You Are What You Eat Challenge." The photos aren't as bad as I thought they would be, but they show what I need to work on, which is my mid section. I've noticed there's not a whole lot of difference between some of my other before and after pictures, and the changes are usually subtle, BUT it's those subtle changes make all the difference between fitting in most of my clothes and not. I really don't have that much weight to shed, it's more about toning up and making better food choices. I posted the photos over at Muscletank.net as well if you want to take a peek.

Finally Friday

YESTERDAY

No workout.

I went to work yesterday and it was an OK day. The guy they interviewed turned out to be great, but he has to give notice at his current job, so he won't be starting for another two weeks. I go back to work on Monday, and it's going to be mayhem. The new girl double booked patients for both doctors, which is tough when we're down a tech. Oh well. It's safe to guess that I probably will be working overtime and not get in a workout or run on Monday.

I went to lunch for sushi with two of the doctors. I don't know if I've ever posted about the sushi burrito before, but it is sooooooooo good! I'm not 100% sure what else is in it besides the tempura shrimp and crab meat, avocado, bean sprouts , cilantro, other veggies, a small amount of cream cheese, and wrapped in a soy bean wrapper, and it comes with it's own special dipping sauce. It's not on the menu. My boss found out about it through the owners, and if you ask for it they'll make it. Definitely not a "clean" meal but I suppose it was better than going out for burgers. I'm suprised I didn't have issues with the cream cheese. No itchy skin. THEN, later that evening I went to dinner with my hubbie at the little fish market just down the street. I was still full from lunch so I did OK with fresh ceviche, which was served in a cocktail glass (small serving) and a small cup of sea food stew.

TODAY

My friend who ran with me the other day wants to run again today. We'll see. He works the graveyard shift so it all depends on when he can get up and get going. If he does get up and going, I hope to do better on my run with him. This weekend I have to get my husband out to do a long run since the half marathon is NEXT week.

There's some creepy guy out here harassing women as they run. I've heard (on the news) a couple of stories about women being harrassed by a guy over at Mission Trails Park, very close to where I used to do most of my running before we moved. In a couple of instances he tried to grab the women, but they were able to get away and others called police. The best piece of advice (from the news article) was to not run alone and be very aware of your surroundings.

EDIT
Ran with my friend. Did much better!

Big Empty

Yesterday
Activity: Run
Date: 08/07/07 09:48 AM
Distance: 3.01 miles
Time: 0:29:25
Speed: 6.1 mph
Pace: 9' 46 min/mile
Calories: 287

A really good friend of mine wanted to run yesterday morning, so he picked me up and we drove down to the bay, where the run path is concrete paved and mostly flat. He only needed to put in a 3 miler, since he's just getting back into running. (FYI - he used to be my personal trainer a while back). I have been feeling really drained the past few days and I was hoping I could get my 3.1 mile (5k) pace in gear, which is in the 8:30 to 9:00 minute mile range. I couldn't get my body in gear. It was just so hard to get myself going. It was a gorgeous morning to be out running but I just didn't have "it." Perhaps I'm still recouping from that 8 mile run at Balboa Park, but this morning's run tanked. This run should have been "easy." It wasn't. As for my friend, he ran in "my" usual 5k range. I should have been able to keep up. I could see him way ahead on the path... I'm was also having computer issues yesterday, so it took FOREVER to get into the internet, and I couldn't post in Blogger.

Monday I was back at the office. The new girl is working out great, which has helped with office morale. I'm hopeful that the guy they interviewed yesterday knocked their socks off and accepted the position. This whole ordeal of not finding qualified techs has been rather draining on everyone.

BTW, I really liked wearing the running skirt at the event on Saturday, If anyone is wondering, they are really comfortable and received a lot of nice compliments...

Today
UBW - Bowflex
Lat tower- 3 grips, cable rows, incline flys & presses, kickbacks, incline cable crunches.

I've signed up for a challenge on Pinkdumbbells.com. It's the "You Are What You Eat Challenge." This challenge couldn't have come at a better time. My eating habits of late have been less than stellar. Here's what I entered on Pinkdumbbells.com:

1) Name: Irene

2) Food: To pay better attention to my eating habits. My running performance has tanked and food is probably a huge part of it, and I want to shed (and keep off) the additional few pounds that keep creeping back... My tummy pooch came back! UGH! I've been rather lax in eating way more processed carbs (foods made with white flour, dairy, packaged & manufactured foods, etc) and foods that I should stay away from, which are high in the wrong fats and unecessary sugars, etc. I need to get back on board with whole grain carbs such as rice and oatmeal, more fresh fruits and veggies, more lean proteins, and more water. Reward: I've just purchased (on sale ) a pair of black Adidas Running shorts with the three red stripes on the sides and a red wicking material t-shirt to match. I'm going to hold off on wearing them until I shed those few last pounds, which SHOULD be by the end of this challenge. If I don't meet my goals, then I don't get to wear the new clothes until I do. The shirt is also a size smaller than I normally buy, and it's a little tight now, so that's an added motivation.

3) Starting stats to come, maybe even pictures.

4) My initial goal is to get out of this rut I'm in. I have zippo motivation right now and I'm just sort of going through the motions of what I initially set out to do, which is run in one event each month this year, for at least 12 events. I'm burnt out and tired, not so much from running but other things in my life. I'm hoping that changing my foods back to healthier choices will improve my outlook and running. I've also purchased "The Bean" just because it's something different. The website is kinda silly to me, but, what the heck? Yeah, I know I probably don't really need it, I have plenty of workout equipment and gym membership, but it wasn't too expensive, it's a new gadget. Besides, I have 30 days to return it.

Other stuff
I had to return one of the running skirts I just bought. Runningskirts.com accidentally sent me a teen sized skirt, which probably fits a 12 year old. I don't think I could even get that on past my calves! Any way, I returned and exchanged it for the correct size. Since they no longer had that same color (Pinky-Maroon), they sent me my next choice of Lilac-Plum. The return transaction was fast and I think I actually prefer the Lilac-Plum color combo.

Happy Trails

Activity: Run
Date: 08/04/07 07:30 AM
Distance: 8.19 miles
Time: 1:23:30
Speed: 5.9 mph
Pace: 10' 12 min/mile

Today was the San Diego Track Club's 8 mile run and 3 mile walk/run through Balboa Park. My posted time was 1:24 and change. I'll edit in the official time when the SDTC posts the final results on their website. The above time was from my Wireless Run Tracker. I still felt good with my finish time, either way, because one of the hills had a grade that was just too steep, and most everybody in front of me walked up it -- I was not alone. The run went on paved roads and dirt trails though and around Balboa Park, and ALMOST in the San Diego Zoo. We ran past some of the concessions at the zoo entry. My husband ran in the 3 mile course, but there was a directional snafu on the trail, so some ran 3 miles and others ran a "bonus" mile, for a 4 mile run. My husband ran the bonus mile. He actually did fine, even with a sore hip. I had the wonderful opportunity to run with Anne again. After the last steep hill on the way to the finish line, she put her legs in gear and went even further ahead of me. I finished with a very nice gentleman, in his 60's, who said he was pacing with me. Ironically, I was pacing with him. I figured that if I stayed with him I would be in pretty good shape.

8/11/07 EDIT - Final results 174 IRENE M 48 8/11 F SAN DIEGO CA 1:24:12 10:32

Here's Anne, running to the finish!

That's me, finish line in sight!

And there I go...
Since my husband finished his 4 miles well before I finished my 8 miles, he was able to man the camera for a while.

In a "random" drawing, I came away with a $20 gift certificate for a local ice-cream shop. It really wasn't too random. We just had to stand around with our race numbers on . One guy pointed at me and said "pick her" so they did.

By the way, I wore my running skirt from runningskirts.com that came in the mail just a day after ordering and in time for today's run event, but they're located just 30 minutes up the interstate....

Now it's time to paint walls!

The Name Game

Yesterday
UBW, moderate weights on the Bowflex for circuits - 6 sets, 20 reps, lat tower, chest presses & flys, upright rows, and kickbacks, bench dips ( but did 6 sets/10 reps of those).

Food was off on Monday. I have a list a mile long of all that went downhill with the food. 'Nuf said. I did much better yesterday.

I'm back at work already!!!! They let go of one of the techs who was still on probation. She said she knew she wasn't "getting" the job so she had been looking elsewhere

Today
Activity: Run
Date: 08/01/07 09:44 AM
Distance: 3.11 miles
Time: 0:32:44
Speed: 5.7 mph
Pace: 10' 31 min/mile
Calories: 293

I ran up the hill and beyond. There's the hill that I've been running up that has a pretty steep grade, but there is more of a hill climb after that hill, so I decided to tackle part of it. The hard part is that there's still more hill after that, and I haven't even tried that yet. It's tough but I figure if I can can conquer those hills, most other runs will be a piece of cake. I think I had mentioned before that one of my neighbors said that the Marines have been known to run up those hills for training...

I think I'll be ready for my 8 mile run this Saturday.

Guess what??? It's time for the list of winners for: "NAME THAT ARTIST /BAND/COMPOSER/MUSICIAN/ETC." For those of you who haven't played yet, it's pretty simple.
