Distance: 3.09 miles

I finally ran today. I walked for about the first three minutes then ran most of the time, then about the last few minutes I walked. If you notice, it now says "run" next to activity. On my BiM program, it separates run and walk into different categories, and since I did more running than walking, I decided to change that setting when I started out. This is a milestone for me. I felt good running, but the right leg is still tight, but not in pain. The tightness causes me to limp a little, and a neighbor walking her dogs called out to me as I'm running by "did you know you were limping?" It's will take a long while to get my muscles all nice and limber again, but until then, I will be lopsided. Based on today's stats, I now know I can do a 5k under 40 minutes.

While I was running, I had a really stupid (but somewhat funny) song in my head that I heard on a YouTube video that someone sent me:

I should have listened to something else before I set foot out the door, something to get me pumped up. I don't wear my iPod Shuffle when I run in the neighborhood because some streets are rather busy, and I need to be aware. Next time I'll listen to my cardio mix before I leave.

Time For A Change

My grandson did great at the dentist yesterday. He became very giggly when they began to give him the anesthesia, and he said everything tickled, according to his mom. He slept most of the day, and had a little bit of an upset stomach, but was back to his very active self this morning. His teacher mentioned that he was showing off his "gold tooth" to his classmates. It's not gold, but it sure cost enough to be gold... I hope this is the last time he needs to go through any dental work, other than a 6 month check up and cleaning.

Still, no running today, but tomorrow looks promising.

Can someone explain why Bush decided to change the date on the time change? It made no sense last year, even for the trick or treaters. They all came out after dark anyway.

Witchy Woman

I've been Tinkerbell and a fairy princess (close enough to Glinda, I had a long dress, a big plastic crown and a magic wand), both were when I was under the age of 5. By Eve, do they mean the counterpart to Adam or music star Eve, or ??? I have no clue who Liz Sherman is, but I've only seen 2 minutes of Hellboy in passing.

There's not too much to report on. I'm waiting for the grand kid to get home from the pediatric dentist. He needed a procedure that required anesthesia. A molar broke and he needs a filling. He's too little to sit still long enough for a regular dentist to do the work. Yes, I'm a little worried, but I know he'll be just fine and HUNGRY when the anesthesia completely wears off later this evening.

I still have yet to run this week.

Allergies.

Ugh.

This morning I woke up with extra puffy eyelids and feeling like I had not slept in days. I thought I grew out of this particular allergic reaction years ago, but it's BAAAACK. The pampas grasses in the area are full of fluffy plumes right now. Fluffy plumes are pretty, but not so great for allergies. I looked like Igor.

These Dreams

Last night was date night with my husband. For the first time in ages I had buffalo wings and a Grey Goose martini. I'm starting to wonder if that combination of food and drink caused my weird dream. I was back in college and Tim Gunn was my Shakespeare Literature teacher, and the class was supposed to be reading A Midsummer Night's Dream, but no one could find it in their books. Oh, Tim Gunn's Guide to Style was the last thing I watched before dozing off...

I have a Tanita scale, an Ormon body fat analyzer, and internet sites that calculate body fat based on measurements. It looks like my body fat percentage is finally going down. I first noticed a change on the Tanita, then I covered the other bases because The Tanita gives me a ridiculously high body fat percentage, although the weight is accurate. My body fat went down about 2 percent. Ever since the injury I just watched my body fat go up about 5%, even though my weight stayed the same. I'm finally making progress again.

How can the winner not win?

Yesterday I had posted the petition to declare Arien O'Connell the winner in the Nike Women's Marathon, held in San Francisco on October 19,2008. She did not start with the elite runners, she started with the regular folk, which are two different categories. She beat out the elite runners, but was not declared the winner. According to an article at SF Gate, Nike was bombarded with calls and e-mails to declare O'Connell the winner.

"The annual event is billed as the largest women's marathon in the world with 20,000 entries. O'Connell ran the race in 2 hours, 55 minutes and 11 seconds. The fastest woman in the elite group ran it in about 3 hours, 6 minutes."

The article also states that O'Connell is A winner, not THE winner.

I went walking, and only walking today. I felt rather off yesterday, and I believe it's from a lack of a good night's sleep due to someone else snoring. Today was just all about getting out there and putting some time on my feet. Today there's also a mini challenge over at PDB, 10 push-ups, 10 crunches, and 10 body weight squats, every day this week. Easy. Done.

Congratulations to all of my friends who participated in the Nike Women's Marathon and Half Marathon yesterday! New personal records were set! I hope to get in next year.

Today

This (below) is what I did today. It posted ALL of my GPS data directly from the BiM site, but it didn't post quite right. Any way, I did an out and back walk/run. Going out I walked for 2 minutes and ran for 1. Going back I walked for 1 minuted and ran for 2. I actually went a bit faster doing this pattern and didn't compromise comfort. I may have to rethink my initial 5k goal time, because I was around 42 minutes + at about 3 miles.

Today is my daughter's 25th birthday. How is it possible that I have a child THAT old when it was just yesterday that I was 25 years old? *cough-cough* We're celebrating with a little cake and singing tomorrow, and maybe even a glass of champagne. She was already all dressed up and out with friends before we had the chance to do anything. Perhaps it's as it should be.

I got in my 3+ miles today, but I did a jog/walk , but mostly walk. The muscles in my right leg are so weak that I found it hard not to over compensate with my left leg while attempting to run, so I took smaller steps and jogged instead of ran. Out of the 3+ miles I put in today, I probably jogged about 3/4ths of a mile. Hey, I'm RUNNING. It's Fall and I'm running, just like all the docs said. Perhaps it's time to do a little 5k goal setting. I wanna see if I can do the 5k on November 9th in under 50 minutes. A year ago my 5K goal was to get under 26 minutes. Now I'm just thankful to be running at all.

Over at Pinkdumbbells.com, I mentioned that I had signed up for the 5k and challenged the other members to join me on November 9, but to do a 5k event in their area or just go the 5k distance on their own. Much to my surprise, the idea is growing. Maggie even had a blog post about making your own 5k race, and making a donation to your charity of choice. The Shelter Island 5k run/walk I'm participating in supports the The 5k I'm in supports the Injured Soldiers Program (Injured US Military) San Diego Adaptive Sports Foundation. Others are selecting to do their own 5k and donating what ever money they would have paid for a 5k event to a charity - such as their local ASPCA. The great thing about making your own 5k is that you can place first in your age group and over all, and win all the prizes! Heh. Any one else out there wanna join us? November 9, 2008 is the date!

I am missing running like crazy, and everything that goes with it, even the sore muscles, blisters, getting up at the crack of dark to run, the track club, the races, the smell of new running shoes fresh out of the box, the smell of old muddy running shoes with the treads all worn off, all of my running garb, and my stop watch with the heart rate monitor. I even miss Gu. I also REALLY missed out on the run events this summer and felt a little wistful when I read about other runners training and events. I have about a month to get ready for a new PW - personal worst, but it can only get better after that, right? See you there, and save a seat for me at the post event brunch.

Nest

Last night we shared an evening with old friends. We met in our late twenties, lived next door to each other when our kids were quite little. My friend often says that "we grew up together." We used to get together on weekends and play Trivial Persuit, Taboo, and other quirky board games, as well as watching the big game on TV and sharing the barbecue. Our husbands coached soccer and we (the ladies) taught cross-stitch classes at the elementary school and did our part as Girl Scout leaders. That whole time frame seems like eons ago. They're our age, but already empty nesters. One kid has his career and the other is on her own, away at college. Their house was so clean because the kids weren't there, and their dog is now the little king. The dog is a silky terrier that probably weighs three pounds on a good day. I love my kids dearly but I keep wondering when they're going to be on their own. With the crummy economy these days, I wonder if they'll ever get out on their own in this area, or even this state. Both of my kids do their part to chip in at home, but I would really like to see them fully on their own. I don't know if my friends are the exception or the rule, but I've met others who have their twenty-something kids still living at home because it's too expensive to move out. Our friends reminded us that, sometimes, their kids come home, not because they miss their parents terribly, but because they need cash... cash and clean laundry. *sigh*

Today I treated my grandson to McDonald's and the park after school. He was taken back a bit when he opened his bag and discovered a miniature sized Barbie doll instead of a Batman toy. His first response was "Mimi, there's something wrong." The expression on his face was "Ewwwwww!" Then he decided to save it and give it to our friends who have a little girl.

Who Are You?

I've been released from physical therapy. My range of motion is great and (as of this morning) I had little to no limp. It's not to say that I'm completely back to normal and can hit the pavement, as I'm still sore and still healing. I'm just a little closer to, perhaps, doing a walk/run. I also finished up one more lab workup today. I hope that is the last time I have to visit the lab for a while.

With the elections nearing, do you find that phone calls to vote one way or the other are constantly making your phone ring or filling your answering machine? I've just quit answering the phone. We have caller ID. If I don't know the number, I just don't answer, and the answering machine will pick up the call. I realize this could be bad if someone I really want to hear from is trying to get in touch with me, say a friend who has moved out of state, and I don't recognize their number. On the flip side of that, if it's important, they can leave a message. It seems that most calls have been pre-recorded political messages.

Heat Wave

hot

We had received a pre-recorded phone call tonight from my grandson's school Principal. The weather forecast calls for more hot, dry weather, and the Principal suggested that each child wear sunscreen and bring bottled water to school. It was in the 90s today. It normally doesn't get that hot in our little costal micro climate. Tomorrow it will be more of the same. I gotta give the school Principal credit, though, for being somewhat proactive and doing what he can do. A lot of the older schools here are not air conditioned, and this district NEVER dismisses school if it does get too hot. We used to live more inland where it was warmer, between two school districts, and my son's middle school was never dismissed for a heat day (100 degrees +). The school just less than a mile away (in a different district) was always dismissed.

Where Are You Going?

I have nothing workout or walking/running related to blog about this week, unless it's about something I've read elsewhere. I'm taking this week off from any physical activity, such as working out or walking. Last weekend I think I just pushed myself too hard and paid for it last week. This week isn't so bad, but the hip is still feeling sore. I also have physical therapy this week AND one more lab test to deal with.

So... What else is there to discuss??? There's plenty.

Here's a few items of discussion:

Do you think it's appropriate for churches to put political information (which has nothing to do with church or religion) in their weekly bulletin? They did this at our church the past two weeks. What about separation of church and state? (I usually try not to get overly political or discuss religion here, but I'm perplexed.)

Vista or Mac? I've read somewhere (perhaps another blog) that having Vista is like installing a garbage disposal on your aquarium. Yes, it looks all nice and pretty right out of the box , but then you have to install it and turn it on...

I've been through the elementary school years with my kids. Now my grandson is there, in the California (San Diego) public school system. Honestly, not much has changed since my kids were there, and I'm a little disappointed. I know each school, whether public or private, has their pros and cons. I've had both of my kids in private schools (Montessori, Catholic, Lutheran, and smaller private educational), a magnet public school (AKA: voluntary integration), and regular neighborhood public school, so I have a somewhat of a decent grasp of what's out there. I'm trying to talk my husband into helping our daughter with financing so we can put our grandson in a smaller private school, perhaps Montessori or Waldorf. This will mean doing without certain house repairs or a few frivolities, but as of right now, I feel like they're wanting him to conform to what a cookie cutter average kid is. He understands his math and reading concepts, and everything else you're supposed to know in Kindergarten, but once done with his task at hand, he's DONE. And bored. And antsy. Antsy equals fidgety, and that leads to time outs. He needs more than they can offer him. Just to make sure I wasn't overreacting, I asked my friend with the degrees in child psychology and elementary education what she thought about my grandson's situation, and she agreed with me. The kid is bored. My daughter is also looking into other extracurricular activities (for the kid) like martial arts and music lessons.

We've installed a reverse osmosis system in our kitchen this weekend. It was somewhat expensive but the idea is to not buy bottled water and reduce waste. We've also looked at the numbers of what it costs yearly to purchase bottled water, and this system should save us some cash over the long haul.

Dry and warm Santa Ana winds are predicted this week, which means the risks for fires are high. I just hope this weather passes through quickly and without incident. Last year was pretty scary, especially when we flew home after the 2007 Nike Women's Half Marathon. We could see the smoke from fires up and down the California coast. We know several people who lost their homes.

How's that for not blogging about anything fitness/running/walking related?

This afternoon, after work, I was just relaxing, watching The Food Network. The grand kid came in and wanted to see what I was watching. At that particular time, Giada De Laurentiis was on, making chocolate pizza. The grand kid's eyes became huge. "Mimi?" ... "Can we make that?" ... "We need to buy..." and then he listed EVERYTHING, exactly, that we needed to make the chocolate pizza. After that he was glued to The Barefoot Contessa and Paula Deen. I was thinking he was just looking for the desserts, but no. He was even intrigued with blue cheese going on to a hamburger. After a time, I turned off the TV so he could go play and get ready for dinner. A few hours later he asked me "Can we watch the cooking shows again?" I guess we'll be making chocolate pizza this weekend.

Self Inflicted

I had every intention of posting something yesterday but I never got around to it. A certain little boy needed some major hugs.

Last night my husband and I went out for dinner instead of our usual Thursday night date. While at dinner he started asking about fall run events. I was kind of surprised that he asked. He hasn't really run since the marathon. He was running because I did. I kept reminding him that he can run on his own, but it's usually me getting him off his butt to run. We might actually show up for a November walk/run 5k. It's one we've participated in before, and there's brunch served afterward. I had it in my head that I did not want to participate in any events, especially a 5k, unless I could run. Well, I'm still not back to running yet. I'm sure I could walk a 5k with no problem, but it would take me just shy of an hour to complete. My head is still wrapped around my pace per mile, beating my last 5k time, seeing that finish line, and running so hard to the end that I feel like throwing up. This would be the first time I would walk a 5k IF we decide to participate. This little time dilemma probably sounds stupid to most people, but my body is still healing and dealing with pain, while my mindset has not changed and is so ready to move on. I'm so impatient right now. I could always just purchase the brunch and not run or walk, and save a spot for my husband at the brunch afterward. We'll see.
