Last night's track workout:

Slow warm up run, about 3 laps, then stretches.

Jog 100
Run 100

Jog 100
Run 200

Jog 100
Run 300

Jog 100
Run 400

Jog 100
Run 400

Jog 100
Run 300

Jog 100
Run 200

Jog 100
Run 100

Cool down jog for several laps on the infield , probably about 5 or 6 laps, then stretches.

I opted for C group because my stomach was having issues before I even arrived at the track. People in C group seemed confused about this workout. Several just did whatever or did more walking instead of jogging due to fatigue. I paced myself behind a woman who knew the workout, and that helped with my overall workout. I didn't use my GPS for this workout, but I suppose I should have. Oh well. I really need to do this workout again, when I'm feeling better. I just didn't have the energy to really push myself, and my stomach was not being kind, either. Barfing was not an option!

I'm back at work tomorrow. One of the new hires walked off the job! We're really not that hard to work for, I swear!

The Information

I found a little tidbit of info regardng the San Francisco Nike Women's Marathon/Half Marathon event for 2008. It's on October 19, 2008, and if you want information as to when the official sign up begins, go HERE. It still has the graphics for the 2007 event, but the box for receiving infor for 2008 is at the bottom of that page, once you get into the site. The half marathon sold out quickly last year, and the marathon sold out in a couple of days after that. They did open up a lottery to let in more runners because of the sell out, but not everyone got in. I plan on signing up for this year's event, and I'm hoping I'll get in again. The plan is to work out the details of the trip better so that I can spend more time with my blog runner friends and take full advantage of the expo. I felt like I missed out on some of the festivities last year, but that was poor planning on my part. Oh yeah, for completing the event you receive a Tiffany & Co. sterling silver finisher's necklace. Feeling motivated?

Speed: 6.3 mph

Today's SDTC run started at our ususal spot, at Hospitality Point, but we took a different route. We ran through Ocean Beach and Dog Beach to Sunset Cliffs (known as the Wahidohi Run ~ or Water, hippies, dogs and hills Run.) I loved this run because we ran right at the cliffs with the Pacific Ocean just right there. It was gorgeous. I wish I had a hat-cam or some sort of easy access camera, because it's one of those things that makes a person feel grateful for being alive and being able to enjoy the experience. It also makes me feel very grateful to reside here.

I also ran with the B group today. I was pretty much in the middle of the pack, but with a water stop after mile 4, and the onset of asthma right before mile 7, I slowed. I'm glad I ran with the B group, though. There was one guy I was able to pace with for the longest time, and he was running a comfortable pace in a sub 9 minute mile pace. Once the asthma kicked in I slowed down to a 10 minute mile pace for a short while, and that did throw off my overall time. It's OK, though. I think this was my fastest 8 mile run, ever.

Next weekend is the Super Run 10K. I'm looking forward to that! It's my first event for this year.

Other Stuff...
My nephew, Kyle, is producing his second play in Chicago this weekend: Expectations. My sister called this morning just gushing. She's so proud! I thought I'd pass along the gushing ~ he is my nephew and Godson, afterall... I obviously can't be there but I'm sure he did a wonderful job. He's also acting in the play as well.

Strange Fruit

This past week has been a bit busy between work and home. There was nothing really unusual this week, just a lot of the same old thing, especially at work. I think I'm finished with work for a little while, until someone else goes on vacation. I did order myself a pair of glasses. The frame is a purple Michael Kors. It's not like I NEED another pair of glasses, but this one will have my most current prescription, which really isn't much of a change. Besides, I got a sweet deal on the frame. No, it wasn't free, but close.

In a previous post I had mentioned that my dog had brought me avocados from under our tree. Every once in a while I would find avocados on my kitchen floor, in the same spot every time. I'm now thinking that my dog has grown fond of avocados because now she's bringing in the pits, unless it's some other animal eating the fruit and the dog is just bringing me what's left. She does like avocados, though.

Little Cream Soda

No workout or run today.

I didn't go into the office today but I had plenty of errands to do, plus getting my hair done/cut. Food has been really clean today. Yesterday I had a diet soda, so that's a quarter in my cup. I didn't even drink the whole thing, perhaps a third of it, but the fact that I even had it (without thinking about it) is enough to pay up. (FYI: Part of the PDB Challenge this month was to pay a quarter for eating/drinking something off plan, and paying a penny for thinking about going off plan but not eating/drinking the off plan food. I put soda, both regular and diet, in my banned foods list.)

In the same strip mall as my hair person, is an indy running shoe store. I needed another pair of socks. The guy there got into telling me all of these cool running routes he and his running buddies have found in some of the newer developments in town. Some of the trails are made of the same stuff they now use for tracks, which makes for a better ride. The area is about a 25 minute drive south for me. I might have to check that out. He also told me not to put my running socks in the dryer because that particular pair of running socks are made with wicking material. They will last longer if they air dry. I didn't know that. Now I need to figure out where to hang my socks...

Slow, Fast, Wait & See

Tonight's workout was a relay of sorts. There were 3 to a team. One of us would run about a half lap, meeting one team mate then they would continue running. While waiting for my other team mate to arrive, I would do some sort of calisthenics, for a total of 12 times. I arrived late, so I chose to run with the C group because B group was already set to go. It was fine. There were a few people who were running at my pace. Since we were teams of 3, there was less chance of slowing down to swerve around others. This is what the workout looked like (speed wise) on my Wireless Run Tracker:

Good workout! Good run!

Conscious Party

I found this list of on Alwyin Cosgrove's blog, via Anthony Robbins. I thought they were worth sharing here:

12 Tenets of Conscious Living

Each New Year brings changes - a new commitment to health - to how we spend our time - and a renewed dedication to those we love.

Each day within the year brings an opportunity for change.

We are here for a reason - and it is a magnificent one.

We are limited by nothing. We are called to create a masterpiece and to give more of ourselves.

1. Live a life of service.

"The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others." Mahatma Gandhi

2. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.

"We need lots of love to forgive, but we need more humility to ask for forgiveness." Mother Teresa

3. Be kind.

"Life is short. But there is always enough time for courtesy." Ralph Waldo Emerson

4. Be remarkable.

"Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss, you'll land among the stars." Les Brown

5. Seek unity.

"Interdependence is and ought to be as much the ideal of man, as self sufficiency." Gandhi

6. Strive for wisdom.

"Science is organized knowledge. Wisdom is organized life." Immanuel Kant

7. Be grateful.

"When you are grateful, fears disappear and abundance appears." Anthony Robbins

8. Think critically.

"The world we have created is a product of our thinking; it cannot be changed without changing our thinking." Albert Einstein

9. Be brave.

"You must do the thing you think you cannot do." Eleanor Roosevelt

10. Be humble.

"Do you wish people to think well of you? Don't speak well of yourself." Blaise Pascal

11. Be creative.

"A creative person is motivated by the desire to achieve, not by the desire to beat others." Ayn Rand

12. Be present.

"How wonderful it is that nobody need to wait a single moment before starting to improve the world." Anne Frank

Distance: 5.20 miles
Time: 0:47:52
Speed: 6.5 mph
Pace: 9' 12 min/mile
Calories: 496

Before today's run I was soooooo going to run with the B group, but I felt sort of sick to my stomach first thing this morning, so I opted for the C group. Today they decided to divide up the B and C group into a couple time ranges with in the groups. Had I known that prior to the run today I would have gone with the B group in the 8 to 9 minute mile ranges. I started my run with the C group in the 10:00 to 11:00 minute mile range.

C group always starts a few minutes after B group. Once we got into the run and found our comfortable pace, couple of us caught up to the back end of B group within the first mile. After this first mile I started chatting with a woman who runs my pace. HOORAY! Turns out she is my age and we're exactly on month apart on our birth-dates. We ran pretty much the whole way together, either slightly ahead or behind each other, but we were never that far away from the other. As it turns out she was having the same mini dilemma as I was, about being in that gray area of being between the B and C groups. As soon as we finished the run there was another woman who finished just about a few seconds behind me and she was in the same predicament about group placement as well. We collectively decided to start running with the B group. We were all concerned about being the slow pokes of B group, but we actually ran right with them. My time splits showed that I ran in the high 8 minute mile range towards the end, giving me negative splits.

One little flub, though, is that we followed the wrong people some place at the first half mile or so ~ which made the route slightly longer, then f0llowed people who were taking a slightly shorter route on the way back. Perhaps that little flub at the beginning made up for the slightly shorter route on the way back. (Yeah, that's it!) You can see on the map above, which is supposed to be one continuous purple line for an out and back run, but it divides in the middle. On the way out I/we ran the extra distance right around where we curve near the bay at Dana Landing. We were supposed to run through a parking lot but we ran around it. On the way back we didn't run right along the bay. I guess I shouldn't rely on others in front of me for directions, but to learn the route map!

Once the guys are done with finishing up our plumbing project today, I can take a shower!

I Never Thought I'd See The Day

I found this meme over at Simply Pink, Life and Times of Notsoccer Mom, and Barbie2be. I hadn't seen this one before, and thought I'd give it a go...

5 things that I never pictured being in my future when I was 25:

1) Completing a marathon. I didn't even picture a marathon until I decided to run in one, and that was 5 years ago when I made the decision. I'm preparing to run in my 4th right now.

2) The Lasik procedure. I've talked about having Lasik before, but when you're 20/800 (that's about a -8.00 correction, plus astigmatism) you can't see worth beans. I had the procedure done about 9 years ago. Now I need readers because of the over 40 thing that happens, but they're not even being close to as bad as my former coke bottle glasses. The little readers are cute and the lenses are very thin.

3) Straight hair. Like Simply Pink, being able to straighten my hair without a huge chemical ordeal and giant plastic rollers is something I've never thought I'd see. My hair is very curly, but due to technology with the evolution of the flat irons and great styling products, I can have sleek hair in less than 20 minutes, and it stays that way for a long time, not just a couple of hours, or if humidity is a factor. What non-curly hair people don't realize is that curly hair can be coarse at times, especially when frizz happens. Oh, I did embrace my curly hair during the 80's and early 90's, when my friends were paying big bucks for curly perms.

4) GPS. You punch in the address and it tells you how to get there and tells you if you've missed a turn. How cool is that? I track my runs with GPS (Bones in Motion)-- how fast I've run, how far I've gone, elevation, weather, calories burned, etc. Even cooler.

5) Blogging. I've journaled since I was about 15, the old fashioned way with pen and paper. Through the internet and blogging I've met many wonderful people who I wouldn't have met otherwise! My writing isn't eloquent, and there's plenty of grammatical errors and typos that would irritate the heck out of some, but I'm not writing a book or a college essay on the pros and cons of wearing uniforms. (Yes, I had to write a paper about the pros and cons of wearing uniforms.)

Run, Run, Run

Tonight I went to the SDTC workout. After a warm up and stretches, we did fitness circuits, which was to stride the straight aways, then either do 25 crunches, push-ups, or jumping jacks, for a total of 12 times. I'm kind of thinking of trying to run with the B group once, just to see if I'm not delusional about my abilities. The B group is for those who run between a 7:30 and a 9 minute mile, where my 5k time is, and the C group is for those who run a 9:30 minute mile and slower, where my marathon time is. I felt really good tonight, and I really could have punched my running, but I had to go slower to navigate around some of the people in C group who started to walk. I totally respect that everyone is coming into this marathon with different abilities. I guess the thing that I'm concerned about is trying to run with the B group and being THAT person who slows everyone down. I kind of wish there was 4 groups instead of 3, as more of a break down in minute/mile groups, but I guess it would a matter of logistics, as to where to fit everyone since there's about 600 of us. Oh well. I'll shut up now. After the circuits, we ran around the track until they told us to stop, so I put in about 6 more laps. My husband made it to the workout late. I didn't see him at all. He called me later to say he was there, but by then I was already on my way home. I'm glad he did show up!

American Pie

This isn't the pie I made for my dad, but an extra one I made out of an excess in apples. The recipe called for 10 Granny Smith apples, but the apples I bought were double the size of the regular ones, so we had enough for another pie. The pie I made for my dad was much prettier than this one and much fuller. This one wasn't as full, so when my son cut into it the crust collapsed. I can't crimp a crust with my fingers to save my life, so I use small cookie cutters and place left-over dough around the edges.

A big congratulations to my friends Chuck and Sylvia for running in their second Arizona Rock 'N' Roll Half Marathon! Sylvia PRed by something like 15 minutes! Also, a big congratulations to blogger buddy Pat, who ran in the Arizona Rock 'N' Roll Marathon, his first marathon. There was never a doubt that Pat would finish and have a phenominal finish time. He just keeps going and going and going...

You Say It's Your Birthday

Happy Birthday Dad!

Today was officially my dad's 79th birthday. Since it coincided with my nephew's birthday (on my husband's side of the family) we celebrated both birthdays today at my sister-in-law's house for dinner. I made my dad an apple pie, his favorite, instead of cake. I wish I could say that we arranged the Chargers win over the Colts today for my dad's birthday, but the timing could not have been more perfect.

In other news, the pipes in the backyard have been replaced and we had water back on before the sun went down yesterday. This is what it looked like yesterday:

It was quite an ordeal, plus there was the discovery of an old septic tank, right over the area where we plan to add on to the house. Just when you think one home improvement issue is all said and done, something else pops up. The old septic tank will need to be removed or filled with dirt. My husband is thinking it will need to come out. My poor dog was besides herself, looking at her lawn all dug up. She likes to sun herself on the lawn if it's a nice warm day. There was little to no lawn for her to strech out on. She would just walk out there and look into the dug out trenches and old pipes. By the way, the plumbing works great! No more backed up sinks, tubs, showers or toilets! Landscaping is to follow...

Today was a run with the SDTC, out at Quivera Basin, which is basically at the bay. Kept an easy pace. My husband did OK but had to make a restroom stop mid way through.

One of the coaches noticed my necklace from the Nike Women's Half marathon and started asking me questions about it, and how much effort it took to just sign up for it. It was kind of funny, though, because she went from informative coach mode to excited and giddy mode when she talked about the Nike event.

I'm back at work. The receptionist at our office quit. She's 21 going on 12. Work got in the way of her social life. Once again, I am back to filling in at the office. Everyone is taking turns being the front desk person, and I'm picking up the slack, where ever the need is. Today was about paper work, stocking the exam rooms and handling some patient issues. I think I saw the doctor once the entire day, since she was swamped. They've already hired a new person, a tech, to fill the position, but there's a couple of weeks of learning how the office runs, then one of the main techs is going on vacation. I figured I'll be there for about 3 to 4 weeks this time. I swear, we're not THAT tough to work for! I know there's usually a certain amount of turn over at any place of employment, but the last few hires have been flakes! They start off great but fizzle along the way. I just don't get it.

I participated in the SDTC Tuesday night workout last night. I found out that our C group is called The Kinks and not Cake like I thought... I kind of liked the name Cake better, although I do like The Kinks music .

Activity: Run
Date: 01/08/08 05:54 PM
Distance: 2.36 miles
Time: 0:22:58
Speed: 6.2 mph
Pace: 9' 43 min/mile
Calories: 225

Our group did a jog/stride along the straight aways, then jogged/walked the curves for 8 laps. Basically, we did intervals, and it looked like this:

It took about the first half mile for me to get in the swing of things, plus I didn't start my tracker until we were already into the run.

I arrived at the track little late due to bad traffic. A 10 minute drive took 30 minutes. The A group was already out running and the B and C groups were doing a series of stretches. My husband never made it because he was stuck in traffic someplace else, and by the time he was near by the workout was over. He went running in our neighborhood instead.

The SDTC schedule gives only one rest day. I'm thinking I may need to incorporate a second rest day or do something completely different that puts no weight on my legs because my knees are starting to twinge, and that's not a good sign. When I ran 3 to 4 days a week I had little to no knee pain.

Speed: 6.2 mph

Today, per the SDTC training schedule, I did a 50 minute run. I opted for the B training schedule today. I'm still waffling between the C and B group schedules because I'm right between the two, but eventually I'll have to settle with one... Or maybe not. I also ran with my heart rate monitor. The one I have is basic. It shows heart rate, time and has a stop watch, but that's it. It would have been interesting to compare calories burned (if it had that feature) with my wireless run tracker. I just need to figure out my numbers and what is normal for me. I was comfortable running when the numbers were around 170, but according to the charts that's supposed to be 100% for my age, and it's not supposed to feel easy. It didn't feel like 100%, and the run was not hard. If any of you reading this have any insight to heart rate monitors and numbers, feel free to comment. I feel like I'm in better cardio-vascular shape than a lot of women my age, so maybe my numbers won't even compare to the charts. See, this just goes to show you that there's always something to learn.

Yesterday my BIL came over to watch the San Diego Chargers/Tennessee Titans game with us. He brought his chow mix dog, Princess. My dog, Logan, wants to be the alpha dog and can be very confrontational. She does not play well with other dogs, but she did amazingly well playing with Princess. This was the first time the dogs had any interaction. It was fun to watch the dogs play, as they chased each other around the yard, played tag, and followed each other around. There was only one scuffle, and that's when food was involved.

By the way, The Chargers beat the Titans, and they're scheduled to play the Colts this coming Sunday. It has been about 13 years since the Chargers advanced in the play-offs round.

We met up with the SDTC nice and early this morning. There were about 600 of us. They went over who all the people to know were, what to expect, and what groups we're in. They have the A, B, and C groups. I put myself in the C group. This consisted of people who run a 9 minute mile or slower. I suppose I could have been in the B group, but my husband asked me to be with him in the C group. I guess it's better to run in the front of the C group instead of bringing up the rear in the B group. They said we can move up or down in what ever group we're in, so it's not like I'm stuck there if I feel like it's too slow. It also rained and never let up once. Our group was supposed to do a 30 minute run around the track, but we ended up doing an out and back run, which I did in 28 minutes, DH did it in 36 minutes. We were all pretty soaked when we were done. I'm so glad I decided NOT to wear my long sleeved cotton t-shirt. Wicking material is great for rain. Oh,and since this is training for the Rock 'N' Roll Marathon, each group has a name of a rock band. I can't remember what A group is called, but B group is Rush and C group is Cake. They came up with and voted on these names last season. I like cake and I like Cake.

A Day Without Rain

No run/workout today. There's a SDTC meet up tomorrow morning. I'm just hoping it doesn't rain much while we're running. It's supposed to be a big, cold, blustery storm... It looked like it might rain today, but it never did.

I stole this off of NotSoccer Mom's blog :

Watch Out, There's an Eyeballrene About.

Enter a word for your own slogan:

I was having fun with this. I kept hitting enter and came up with more slogans with my *name* ... I also got "Now with 50% more Eyeballrene," and ""The sweet you can't eat without Eyeballrene."

Teehee...

Take The L

"...out of lover and it's over."

The holiday season is is officially over. Eveyone at home has returned to work, intersession classes at school, or cleaning up. I really enjoy the holidays and I really don't like to see them go so quickly. We have a faux pine Christmas tree so there's no real rush to take it down, but I suppose it's time to take it down. I do know people who leave up their Christmas decor until the end of January. Then there's collectors who leave Christmas decor up year 'round. I think it would lose it's charm if I left Christmas decor up all year. All the Chrismtas decor in and on my house came down today. By the way, the above ornament, the cute little toaster with the toast that actually pops up, was gift to me from my husband.

I'm itchy to get out and run but I'm waiting for an appliance repair person to show up. Our washing machine isn't working. It's not a matter of opening the back and tinkering with it any more, as with our prior machine. It's all computerized and needs an expert to check it out. They didn't give me an ETA of when the person should show up, they just said sometimes today.

Here's the list o' winners from guess that artits, singer, band, etc... I was supposed to post this yesterday. Oops. It's the very last full list I'll be doing. From now on (or at least for 2008) I'll list the answers and winners daily. Thanks for playing along!

I Could Write A Book

Rain is predicted for the weekend. I'm hoping rain won't be an issue for Saturday, which is our first SDTC marathon training meet-up.

I've gone ahead and joined up Blog 365. We'll see how well it goes. I'm supposed to blog every day for one year. I was a little apprehensive about doing this because I was so over daily blogging for just a month in November. Perhaps this would be a good opportunity to take more pictures and work on my photography skills. Blog 365 is all about posting daily, which includes pictures -- It doesn't have to be about writing.

I'm not sure what's up, but my dog, Logan, and male tabby cat, Lumpy, have been hanging out together these days. The dog has actually shown that she cares for the cat. A couple of nights ago Logan was scratching at my son's door and would not leave my son alone. Finally, my son got up and Logan led my son to the sun room. Lumpy was locked in the sun room and this upset Logan. The past week, these two animals have greeted each other in the morning when we get up with no confrontation what-so-ever. Now, if we could just figure out how to get the other two cats to call a truce with the dog, then we'd have something, but the other two cats have declared warfare on the poor dog. Oh well. One out of three isn't so bad.

Height Is A Beautiful Thing

Happy New Year!

My husband and I ended up at one of our local haunts, just with in walking distance (just in case we needed to walk home) to ring in the new year. We had a great time and did OK as far as food and drink went. No hang-overs or headaches, but a very late wake up time. Once we were up and going we decided to go for a walk. This time I brought my camera. Someone had once asked me about THE HILL that I occasionally take on for training. Now here's the pictures....

If any of you have ever run in the San Diego Rock 'N' Roll Marathon, you've gone down this street and taken a right at this intersection, which is the foot of THE HILL. Fortunately, for those who run in the SDRNR Marathon, they don't have to run all the way up the hill or the steepest part of it. This is about a half mile away from where I live.

Here's the foot of the hill. From here you can see what I refer to as THE HILL in the distance.

Almost at the top...

View from the top...

After a right hand turn at the top of the hill, there's still more hill to go up before we reach the church.

This is the view of Mission Bay from the church parking lot ...

On our way down the hill...

It doesn't look that steep from this shot of my husband walking down, but when I attempt to run on this short stretch of sidewalk, I often worry about tripping and rolling down this hill...

Here's the home stretch and it flattens out again.

2008 goals:

1) Get more organized. We have way too much junk that we don't use. It's time to really clean up and make space and really organize so we can find the stuff we really use. (Stuff has been in boxes, still, since we moved in last December)

2) Train for a sub 5 hour marathon, preferably 4:45 or faster. Perhaps I should rephrase that... Train for a 4:45 marathon or faster.

3) Take real music lessons (guitar) instead of faking what ever songs I happen to know. I think I put this goal on my list for last year but I have yet to do it.

4) Volunteer. It has been a while.

5) Get the backyard looking like a place I want to vacation in, instead of a place I want to ignore.

6) Make more healthy homemade meals. I noticed we all do better when we all eat better. I need to make the effort of preparing less processed foods.

I'm sure there will be more to add to my list of goals.

Other stuff...

On the the song game... I'm still going to title my posts with song titles but I will no longer wait until the end of the month to post all of the winners, I'll post the winner on the following day's blog. I'm going to give a stab at blogging daily, per Juls' suggestion. It will be easier for me to manage the song thing/game/meme daily. I'll finish up the December 2007 winners tomorrow.

I'm still messing around with my blog template. I've tried different color schemes, but they either didn't work or hurt to look at, so I stuck with something easy to look at and rather simple, until I can find something that is more me. Soft yellow is nice but it's not a color that I identify myself with, however, it goes well with the sunset picture from a day at sea on our recent cruise.

Have a fantastic year!
