Morning

Activity: Run
Date: 10/17/09 07:26 AM
Distance: 10.02 miles
Time: 1:51:52
Speed: 5.4 mph
Pace: 11' 09 min/mile
Calories: 954

I ran with the Rehab United group this morning and brought Michael with me. My agenda was to put in 10 miles, but I wasn't planning on any steep hills. Well... There was one steep hill that I took on, going through Sunset Cliffs Park, but since I was doing an out and back (sort of) the 5 mile marker on my BiM chimed before I made it to the top of the hill. (Yes!) My pace for today's run was more in the 10:30 to 10:50 minute/mile range. I had to stop for traffic lights a few times, and when I tried to adjust those stops, it took off some distance.

My hips were feeling rather sore before I finished the run, which is unusual. I don't think it's anything to worry about, but I will discuss it with Bryan on Monday. I'm thinking it's just because I need more hill work, and I will continue to be sore and become more sore until I can get in more steep hill runs -- provided those hills are outdoors and not fake treadmill ones.

Good times.

There was no reason to have a camera on me today because the visibility was just like this for the majority of the run:

Normally, there's a gorgeous view of the ocean right off of the cliffs, but this morning the fog just took over.

Yesterday my daughter turned 26. How is it possible that I have a daughter that old when I'm only 29? *cough-cough* She went out with her boyfriend last night, and today no one is home, so we're all going out to breakfast tomorrow morning to celebrate. For some weird reason we do better celebrating birthdays and major holidays over breakfast. Happy birthday Renee!

Happy race day to all of my running friends who have races THIS weekend!

Ups and Downs

Activity: Run
Date: 07/25/09 08:12 AM
Distance: 7.00 miles
Time: 1:21:52
Speed: 5.1 mph
Pace: 11' 41 min/mile
Calories: 658

Today's run was a doozie. It was through the back trails of Balboa Park, where there's at least a 19% grade on a few of the longer hills. It was supposed to be an 8 mile run. Towards the latter part of the run I kept thinking that we were missing a hill, and it turns out I was right. I was following behind a group of women who looked like they knew where they were going, but they forgot an extra loop to fit in that last mile. The thing about running through Balboa Park early in the morning is that you never want to run alone due a few of the transient folk still lingering. Most of the transients want to be left alone, anyway, but it's better to be safe in numbers, which is why I followed the women in front of me. I'm perfectly fine with 7 miles. I did walk up two hills and took it easy on the steep downhills, which explains the much slower average pace.

Now that I'm back to tracking everything on Fitday again, it seems I'm coming up short on calories, and I need to fit in something before bed, while keeping the lean protein numbers slightly higher than everything else -- meaning no delving into the cookies. Normally, I have to hold back so I don't over do it. I'm not sure why there's a shift, not being as hungry, but I sure hope it eventually shows up on my physique (less gut, more toned legs and arms) -- I still have plenty of catching up to do.

Speaking of hungry...
My husband and I decided to hit the High Dive after the run. I had a vegetable omelet sans cheese that looked rather large at first glance, but I inhaled it, plus the hash browns and toast... Now I'm stuffed to my ears.

Every time we go to the High Dive I find a few new stickers that just bust me up:

Hill Repeats
The first mile was just running mostly downhill just so I could get to the part of the neighborhood where I could do hill repeats. The secret to hills, which really is no secret, is have lunges and squats be a big part of your routine. It felt good to power up those hills and cool down on the flat parts and the down hills. I'm really appreciating all of those lunges and squats they have me do at RU.

Ever since the 4th of July my nutrition has been off. I've been craving carbs like crazy. I don't know if it's because I've had a shift in workout routines or what, but I could easily eat a whole giant Costco sized bag of Stacy's Pita Chips, the plain ones. To make it more seem balanced, I made some hummus last night, but it doesn't make up for all the chips I inhaled. I suppose it could have been worse. I could have jumped into an entire box of Hostess chocolate cupcakes, but I didn't.

I purchased tickets to see Jim Gaffigan on 7/31. He's the guy who talks about bacon, cake, and Hot Pockets... I think a change of pace will liven up the routine.

What a Difference a Day Makes

...Or a week.

Activity: Run

Distance: 10.64 miles
Time: 1:56:55
Speed: 5.5 mph
Pace: 10' 59 min/mile
Calories: 1022

That's more like it. I felt really good today, unlike last week's drudgery of a run. Today I felt well, no extreme aches, the calf was a little twitchy at the start, but it seemed to work itself out as I ran. I felt like I was taking it easy, and I was, but my splits look so much better than last weeks. Sure, today's run was just a little over 10 1/2 miles, just about half of what I did last week, but last week I was scoping out restroom locations from the get go, which is never a good sign. A few miles into today's run I saw AKA Alice running in the opposite direction, and we made an attempt at a run-by high five. She must have started an hour or more before we did.

This out and back run is relatively flat. I kind of had to laugh when the women just behind me said something about "I can't believe they're making us run these hills, it's supposed to be a taper." I felt like saying "what hills?" OK, there were little hills, but there are bigger hills on the marathon course. I guess it's all relative. After running in the San Francisco Nike Women's Half Marathon in 2007, I gained a new perspective on hills. Now, THOSE are hills.

Steal Away

Activity: Walk
Date: 11/19/08 10:34 AM
Distance: 3.00 miles
Time: 0:58:59
Speed: 3.1 mph
Pace: 19' 21 min/mile
Calories: 284

I decided to walk today instead of run, however, I took on the hill with the 16% grade. It's sort of like taking on several flights of stairs. It's really good for working out the hamstrings and quads.

Nutrition is OK, so far. I still need more low fat protein, though.

I'm still mulling around the idea of a running coach. I corresponded with two running coaches right after my surgery, just to make sure someone would be willing to work with me. I can't see how I run, but I know I'm running lopsided. I need someone who can tell me how to correct what I'm doing as I run. Part of that is building back the muscle I've lost in the right leg, and the other part is relearning running mechanics with my new situation. We'll see.

Last night my husband came home from work rather late. He has a new project, which means extra long hours. He was tired and just sort of put everything down on the kitchen table then went into our room to change. When he went back into the kitchen, he couldn't find a brown paper sack with his deli sandwich in it. He was planning on eating the sandwich for dinner. He said he knew he was tired, but he remembered bringing in the sack. He went back out to his car just to make sure he didn't leave it there. No sack. No sandwich. Then he looked through our room, thinking he might have mindlessly brought it in there. Nope. Nothing. THIS MORNING, I got up and took a look out of the kitchen window, as I do every morning. I yelled out to my husband, who was still in our room, "I think I've found your sandwich, or what's left of it." Apparently, the dog stole the sack with the sandwich and took it outside to eat it. There was deli paper and the brown paper sack ripped up and all over our back yard lawn this morning. When did the dog become so sneaky? She's never stolen food before, unless it should fall on the floor. Maybe the sack fell on the floor and my husband didn't know it? Maybe the dog conveniently knocked the sack on the floor? I don't know. At least my husband know knows he wasn't going nuts. There really WAS a sandwich in a brown paper bag.

Everybody I Love You

I had every intention of delving into more books this summer, but one of the pain medications I was (and still am) using takes my attention span to that of a flea with ADD. The days I am more clear minded have been spent making an attempt to read more than just magazines and random stuff on the internet. One of the books I've just finished is I Love Everybody (and Other Atrocious Lies) The Tales of a Loudmouth Girl by Lauie Notaro. This book was lent to me by my hair dresser. It's a good, light summer book. A chapter is very doable if you're strapped for time or, in my case, dealing with drug induced flea ADD, and a chapter is all I can deal with and remember. Laurie Notaro talks about her mother frequently in this book, and often quotes her. I was actually quite surprised when one of the quotes in the book was something my own mother said to my sister. I just about died laughing because it was so spot on, especially a reference to truck drivers and prostitutes.

Back when I was still living at home, and Mom was still around, my sister, who was probably about 12 or 13 years old at the time, said a very, VERY bad word. My mother overheard this word and scolded my sister, saying "who do you think you are?" "With a mouth like that do you think your mother's a prostitute and your father's a truck driver?" I had to leave the room because it was so funny, I burst out laughing. Later on, my sister was also laughing, but we didn't let Mom know. Mom would have been even more upset that we were laughing... To this day we're still laughing.

Real good times.

Today I also ventured out into the world. My husband and I went for a walk. I took my cell phone and turned on the BiM GPS to track my walk. This is the first longish walk I've taken since the marathon, when we had to walk from the parking area to the water table and back, and I was using a walker at that time.

I had taken pain meds, had my cane, and had to remind Michael to go slow. My neighborhood is hilly, and it was difficult to even navigate walking down hill a little. Wow. It took me about a half hour to burn off 88 calories and barely go one mile! I sure have my work cut out , don't I? Will I be even be running by fall? That's all besides the point at the moment. Each day is a little better. Each day I'm limping less. Each day is less painful.

Today I was thinking about walking, but once I got outside I thought I could handle a slow run, so that's exactly what I did. I'm still a little stiff from last Saturday's long run, but once I got going I did OK. The first mile, as always, was a dog, and everything felt tight, but once I got past that it was OK.

Here's a few photos from our Low Tide Run on Saturday morning...

Just north of La Jolla Shores, at Black's Beach. What a great way to start the morning!

A beautiful scene but so hard to run or wak on!

Weird Science

Activity: Run
Date: 04/12/08 06:50 AM
Distance: 38.62 miles
Time: 2:56:12
Speed: 13.2 mph
Pace: 4' 33 min/mile
Calories: 1542

Take a look at the above stats. Not even in my wildest dreams can I run THAT fast, and I've never gone THAT far in one running day. The time is correct and the calories burned is probably close to correct, but everything else was thrown off by GPS bouncing. I probably ran somewhere between 15 and 16 miles with an average minute/mile pace of around 10:30 to 11:00. I sent an e-mail to the my contact over at Bones in Motion, so I hope he's able to edit my run without me having to enter everything manually.

That huge, purple triangle should not be there. I'm guessing the GPS transmission bounced because we ran past a TV station van with it's own GPS antennas up, on the way up the coast and on the way back. (I'm sure they were reporting on the unseasonably wonderful weather we've had today.) Another speculation is that we ran under the flight path for NAS Miramar. There's also UCSD and several other well known buildings in the area, which could have contributed to the bouncing. I've had some minor GPS bouncing before, but it would be just within the street I would be running on, and it would never really add to the mileage.

Back to the run...
We actually ran on the beach. I'm not fond of running right on the beach -- something about the sand sifting into my shoes through the mesh fabric, we're running at an angle, and we had to slow to walk over a stretch of boulders and rocks, BUT it was absolutely gorgeous. I hope someone took a picture of the beach this morning so I can post it here later. I also met a couple of runners I hadn't met before, and that's always a treat. This run was also hilly. You know the hill in my neighborhood I always discuss? By comparison it's nothing compared to the hill we had to tackle today, while going up hill at Torry Pines State Park. Yikes. I walked up it, and so did the majority of our group. As I had mentioned before, it was warm out. Thank goodness we finished our run at La Jolla Shoes, and several of us took off our shoes and went in the (cold) ocean water to cool off and recoup. Ahhhhhhhh...

My husband had the day off today, so we opted for a slowish, long walk in the neighborhood. We took on the hill and then some, but walking up that hill isn't as tough as running up. The quads and knees are still a little tight from last week, but no real pain. DH was supposed to take this week off and we were supposed to take a trip some place tropical, like Cancun or Acapulco, but he never could decide where, since this was supposed to be for his birthday. We're doing taxes instead. Yay us...

Today was definitely a recovery run. I ran in the neighborhood, which includesd some hills. I purposely went out slow, but in all honesty, I would have been in trouble if I went faster, even though I wasn't going that fast to begin with. I'm feeling that deep arthritic knee twinge I'm too familiar with, but this is not a twinge I can ignore. I really need to pay attention to getting in those high rep, low weight leg extension and leg curl exercises on my non running days and STICK WITH IT. Now that my work schedule isn't so weird will be easier to fit in all the necessary workouts and be in a pain free state of ready for the marathon on June 1.

Height Is A Beautiful Thing

Happy New Year!

My husband and I ended up at one of our local haunts, just with in walking distance (just in case we needed to walk home) to ring in the new year. We had a great time and did OK as far as food and drink went. No hang-overs or headaches, but a very late wake up time. Once we were up and going we decided to go for a walk. This time I brought my camera. Someone had once asked me about THE HILL that I occasionally take on for training. Now here's the pictures....

If any of you have ever run in the San Diego Rock 'N' Roll Marathon, you've gone down this street and taken a right at this intersection, which is the foot of THE HILL. Fortunately, for those who run in the SDRNR Marathon, they don't have to run all the way up the hill or the steepest part of it. This is about a half mile away from where I live.

Here's the foot of the hill. From here you can see what I refer to as THE HILL in the distance.

Almost at the top...

View from the top...

After a right hand turn at the top of the hill, there's still more hill to go up before we reach the church.

This is the view of Mission Bay from the church parking lot ...

On our way down the hill...

It doesn't look that steep from this shot of my husband walking down, but when I attempt to run on this short stretch of sidewalk, I often worry about tripping and rolling down this hill...

Here's the home stretch and it flattens out again.

2008 goals:

1) Get more organized. We have way too much junk that we don't use. It's time to really clean up and make space and really organize so we can find the stuff we really use. (Stuff has been in boxes, still, since we moved in last December)

2) Train for a sub 5 hour marathon, preferably 4:45 or faster. Perhaps I should rephrase that... Train for a 4:45 marathon or faster.

3) Take real music lessons (guitar) instead of faking what ever songs I happen to know. I think I put this goal on my list for last year but I have yet to do it.

4) Volunteer. It has been a while.

5) Get the backyard looking like a place I want to vacation in, instead of a place I want to ignore.

6) Make more healthy homemade meals. I noticed we all do better when we all eat better. I need to make the effort of preparing less processed foods.

I'm sure there will be more to add to my list of goals.

Other stuff...

On the the song game... I'm still going to title my posts with song titles but I will no longer wait until the end of the month to post all of the winners, I'll post the winner on the following day's blog. I'm going to give a stab at blogging daily, per Juls' suggestion. It will be easier for me to manage the song thing/game/meme daily. I'll finish up the December 2007 winners tomorrow.

I'm still messing around with my blog template. I've tried different color schemes, but they either didn't work or hurt to look at, so I stuck with something easy to look at and rather simple, until I can find something that is more me. Soft yellow is nice but it's not a color that I identify myself with, however, it goes well with the sunset picture from a day at sea on our recent cruise.

Have a fantastic year!

Deck The Halls

Deck the halls with avocados!
Fa la la la la,
la la la la!

Yeah, it's a little bit too early for holiday songs, unless you're advertising on TV.

Yesterday, while spending a little time outside with the dog, she retrieved some avocados that had fallen off the tree(s) and brought them to me ~ well, sort of. She dropped them several feet from where I was standing. This was a first for her, bringing me avocados, but I really shouldn't be too surprised. She is part lab retriever. It sure beats the pinecones she used to bring in from the neighbor's tree at our prior neighborhood, which left a dusty, prickly mess on the floor. The avocados aren't even close to being picked off the trees yet, so they're a bit like rocks. The avocados still need about another month or so on the trees before they're ready to harvest. I'm not sure if the dog actually likes avocados as far as food goes. I'm more inclined to think she's just playing around, as if they were one of her tennis balls.

Today's run was my first run in 6 days. If I had planned it out better, such as taking my water belt, I could have put in more miles. I wasn't sure what to expect since I'm still dealing with a cold. The first mile was hard, but once I got warmed up and found my "groove," it wasn't so bad, and I was thinking I could do more than just 3, but I was needing water. I ran up and down some hills, but not anything treacherous.

Even though I wasn't feeling 100%, I felt like I needed to get in some hills, so I took on THE HILL, the one just after the 1.5 mile marker. It kind of helped that I didn't run THE HILL right at the start, but had somewhat of a warm up prior to it, so I was able to sort-of run up. Even with a couple of stops for traffic along the way, I'm feeling really good about my time because I wasn't pushing for speed. I even turned off the mile marker beep on my WRT, so I wasn't really sure how far I had gone until I was finished, but I did have an idea.

I don't make it a practice to weigh in every day, but I felt like I needed to since my activity since Saturday wasn't all that great, even with yesterday's lack luster UBW. I weighed in at 124 this morning. I'm not holding my breath with that number right now, especially with the carb-loading I have planned this week, but it was sort of nice to see the number drop. Technically, I'm just a pound from my initial goal of dropping 5 pounds from the last challenge, and getting to wear the new running clothes (red & black) which was my prize for losing that 5 pounds. If everything continues as it has, I'll give it about 2 weeks time to settle into the 124 spot.

Today is my daughter's 24th birthday. I'm not sure if we're doing anything with her tonight or not. I believe she has plans with the BF. He already brought her a dozen red roses first thing this morning. We'll probably have a little cake this evening and a few small gifts. We'll see how the day goes.

We managed to get the cat back in the house, or at least I did. She was meowing, in the bushes near the front porch. I had to coax her out with food, and grabbed her. She was happy to be back in and was glued to me all night... My cats live indoors, and she had never been outside of this house since we moved here. She didn't know how to get back in.

Earthquake Weather

Activity: Run
Date: 09/05/07 09:28 AM
Distance: 3.58 miles
Time: 0:35:51
Speed: 6.0 mph

Pace: 10' 00 min/mile

Calories: 341

The weather has cooled down but the humidity seems higher. I was pretty well drenched after my run today. I felt good about my run, but since summer vacation is over for most people, the streets seemed busier more car traffic, and I had to slow or stop a few times to yield the right-of-way. This was one of those runs that I had to be very aware of everything around me, so there was no way I could get lost in my thoughts... It was just too busy. I ran in my neighborhood, but avoided "the hill." I'll take on that hill again, soon. I can't avoid hills in my neighborhood, so I did have my share today, just not THAT one.

Yesterday was my grandson's first day of school, ever. He's been to a home daycare since he was a baby, so this was a big day for him. He handled the first day well, so well that he wanted to stay and it was hard for my daughter to pry him off the playground equipment when it was time to go home. As with all family traditions, as we did with my children, here's his first day of school picture:

He came home so exhausted, and fought falling asleep all afternoon, but was deep asleep even before his usual bed time.

If you live in San Diego, CA, did you feel it? Yesterday, there was a smallish earthquake off the coast, about 4 miles out. It was in the 4.0 range. If you've never experienced a small earthquake before, this one felt like a large dump-truck just went by and shook the house enough to make a few things rattle. The only thing I check to see if it actually was an earthquake, is to look at one of my hanging lights - like the one pictured to the right - to see if they're swaying, and that's usually a good indicator... Granted, swaying hanging lights are not very scientific, but that's what I look at if the house should rattle... Of course, the local news had to play it up until they had more serious matters to report on. The earthquake wasn't that serious, but but it's enough to get the geologists excited.

Have a wonderful Wednesday!

Hills

I'm feeling a zillion times better today. I had a good run in the neighborhood. At first it didn't feel like it, but based on the pace it was decent, so that was a nice surprise. I also ran a different route and turned off the mile indicator beep on the wireless run tracker. Perhaps ignorance is bliss? Not knowing how far I've actually gone did something mentally? I got out before it became too hot, but the humidity was still there, but it wasn't a factor. For the first time in a long time I enjoyed my run. To celebrate my run, I turned on the sprinklers in the front yard and just stood there, on the lawn, to cool off.

Yesterday my food wasn't all that great. I didn't cheat all that much, a few Nilla Vanilla Wafer Cookies here and there with DGS, but I still felt sluggish all day. I drank a lot of water, hoping that would help the headache situation. Maybe the water helped. Today the food choices are better, so far. I didn't post here yesterday, but I ended up with a headache that wiped me out. I don't get a lot of headaches, though , so I'm hoping it was the weird weather that triggered it. I know some people are blaming everything on the lunar eclipse the other night. Heh.

Have a great Thursday.

Hot Child In The City

Irene M F 48 San Diego CA 02:26:38(Chip) 11:12(pace) 6322 02:29:08(clock) 01:03:23(10k split)

This is the first half marathon where I had to walk. I'm usually able to run the entire way but it was just too humid and people were literally dropping! I've never seen so many EMT's taking care of people at an event before. I was drenched in sweat by mile 3 of the run. I wasn't expecting to PR at this event but I did run in the anticipated range. My best half marathon time is 2:19 and I finished in 2:26. I'm glad I didn't force myself to run the entire way because of seeing way too many people get sick. We saw one guy who we recognized from several of the runs we participate in and he was disoriented and passed out a few times, and this guy usually places in the top spots! We watched the EMT's place him into an ambulance for a ride the hospital. People who have run this event before said that today's weather for this run was rather miserable. I felt OK with my finish, mostly because I finished. I did PR my 10k split for a half marathon, though, and that was a surprise. I lost ground towards the last couple of miles and began walking, where there was a hill we had to go up before the last mile stretch. The hill wasn't actually that bad, it's just that I didn't want to be amongst those who were passing out... My hubbie finished in 3:06 and feels sick to his stomach. I think the heat really got to him. He can usually run a half marathon in about 2:45 - 2:50. I'll post pictures later.

I'm beat!

Happy Trails

Activity: Run
Date: 08/04/07 07:30 AM
Distance: 8.19 miles
Time: 1:23:30
Speed: 5.9 mph
Pace: 10' 12 min/mile
Calories: 783

Today was the San Diego Track Club's 8 mile run and 3 mile walk/run through Balboa Park. My posted time was 1:24 and change. I'll edit in the official time when the SDTC posts the final results on their website. The above time was from my Wireless Run Tracker. I still felt good with my finish time, either way, because one of the hills had a grade that was just too steep, and most everybody in front of me walked up it -- I was not alone. The run went on paved roads and dirt trails though and around Balboa Park, and ALMOST in the San Diego Zoo. We ran past some of the concessions at the zoo entry. My husband ran in the 3 mile course, but there was a directional snafu on the trail, so some ran 3 miles and others ran a "bonus" mile, for a 4 mile run. My husband ran the bonus mile. He actually did fine, even with a sore hip. I had the wonderful opportunity to run with Anne again. After the last steep hill on the way to the finish line, she put her legs in gear and went even further ahead of me. I finished with a very nice gentleman, in his 60's, who said he was pacing with me. Ironically, I was pacing with him. I figured that if I stayed with him I would be in pretty good shape.

Here's Anne, running to the finish!

That's me, finish line in sight!

And there I go...
Since my husband finished his 4 miles well before I finished my 8 miles, he was able to man the camera for a while.

In a "random" drawing, I came away with a $20 gift certificate for a local ice-cream shop. It really wasn't too random. We just had to stand around with our race numbers on . One guy pointed at me and said "pick her" so they did.

By the way, I wore my running skirt from runningskirts.com that came in the mail just a day after ordering and in time for today's run event, but they're located just 30 minutes up the interstate....

Now it's time to paint walls!

The Name Game

Yesterday
UBW, moderate weights on the Bowflex for circuits - 6 sets, 20 reps, lat tower, chest presses & flys, upright rows, and kickbacks, bench dips ( but did 6 sets/10 reps of those).

Food was off on Monday. I have a list a mile long of all that went downhill with the food. 'Nuf said. I did much better yesterday.

I'm back at work already!!!! They let go of one of the techs who was still on probation. She said she knew she wasn't "getting" the job so she had been looking elsewhere

Today
Activity: Run
Date: 08/01/07 09:44 AM
Distance: 3.11 miles
Time: 0:32:44
Speed: 5.7 mph
Pace: 10' 31 min/mile
Calories: 293

I ran up the hill and beyond. There's the hill that I've been running up that has a pretty steep grade, but there is more of a hill climb after that hill, so I decided to tackle part of it. The hard part is that there's still more hill after that, and I haven't even tried that yet. It's tough but I figure if I can can conquer those hills, most other runs will be a piece of cake. I think I had mentioned before that one of my neighbors said that the Marines have been known to run up those hills for training...

I think I'll be ready for my 8 mile run this Saturday.

Guess what??? It's time for the list of winners for: "NAME THAT ARTIST /BAND/COMPOSER/MUSICIAN/ETC." For those of you who haven't played yet, it's pretty simple. I title my blog posts with song titles. Be the first to correctly guess who recorded/performed the song, post your answer under "comments," and if you are correct, the glory is yours.
