In My World

I thought I would take a go at today's TIART.

"Today's theme is .... Only in running... Have you ever noticed that your definition of "acceptable" changes when it comes to your running? Your standards of public displays of bodily functions lower, you find it acceptable to give bear hugs to sweaty complete strangers who you bonded with in the last mile of a tough race, you easily pay $100+ for a pair of shoes you may wear a few months, and on and on. Share your take of the interesting and peculiar things running brings into our lives."
  • Upon seeing someone wearing a t-shirt from a run event is every reason to strike up a conversation about running. ("Did you actually run in that race? Are you planning to do that one again this year? How did you do? Did you PR? How about that hill at mile 6?")
  • I, too, have given and received hugs to or from people before, during and after a run event. The sweatiest people were at the 23.5 point at last year's San Diego Rock 'N' Roll Marathon, where I volunteered at the hydration tables. I hugged a whole lot of sweaty people that day.
  • Because I run my father thinks I know everyone who runs. I think this is funny because I don't think my dad realizes how many people run, and just in my city alone. ("My doctor runs. She has all of her race numbers taped to her office wall. You probably know who she is!")
  • I accepted a ride to a run event from a blogging runner who I had never met in person. That was 3 years ago. (Remember what your mom said about accepting rides from strangers?) I'm still alive, no creepy person, and we're still friends. Hi Anne!
  • It was so cold that we thought nothing of reusing someone else's discarded gloves! The 2007 PF Chang's AZ Rock 'N' Roll Half Marathon had start of the race temperatures around 24 degrees Fahrenheit . Who would have thought it would be THAT cold? Phoenix NEVER gets that cold, or so we had just assumed. The race brochure shows people running with tank tops and shorts and boasts about the warm climate. Even the locals were perplexed with the cold snap. Around the second mile of the run we were so cold that my husband "shopped" the ground for discarded mittens/gloves. At first my reaction was "ewww", but my fingers were numb and any warm mittens/gloves would do. I got over the "ewww-ness" of it.

I'm sure I'll think of more "only in running" incidents later, but those are the ones that come to mind.

24 in Phoenix is unheard of!

I love that your dad thinks you know all runners, I think a lot of people do that. :)

Ha! You forgot to mention that the running blogging stranger was a half hour late to pick you up!

Sadly, I'm pretty sure this song's by Avril Lavinge. Sad in that I'm way too old to have known that, but I remember listening to it during my middle school carpool days.

Heh... i remember specifically wearing a sleeveless shirt and shorts the day after i did my triathlon so that when people saw me at the farmers market they would know i had done something athletic. :)

Thanks for stopping by my blog and leaving a comment.

I am now friends with several runners whom I met online. Some live close to me and others, not so close but we meet up at races.

I agree with the t-shirt comment. I do the same thing.

I wore a pair of mismatched snow gloves that day. It was that cold. I left them at the 2-3 mile range. If you picked them up, I'd like them back. LOL.

I even wore a parka to the start line. That was my first HM.

Loved the post.

I got in a car with a blogger that I'd never met in real life before. We went running together, and I even had given him total authority to coach me. He's great; he's the amazing hip.

OK...this post completely made me laugh because before I even knew you, I knew about your husband who shared "long-run digestion problems" stories with "Alberta" during the Low-Tide run last year.

On that same run, I'll never forget running next to some woman, who looked like my mother...we were running together, and not having much fun because it was really hot that day, and we were tired of the hills (especially that last, long, really steep down-hill into La Jolla Shores), and she just said, "where the "F" is the beach."

RunningLaur,
No kidding! We stayed with friends who live just outside of Phoenix and they were just amazed with the coldness! I guess mother nature had some tricks up her sleeves that day!

Anne,
For some weird reason I didn't never remember you being late until you bring it up, maybe because I live with someone who is habitually late. So close on the song title! It's off by just one word! Hers is "My World."

Barbie2be,
That's just awesome! I know people who show off their black and blue toenails, just to let everyone know they've run a marathon! Winner!

Sister Sneaker,
Oh, I've also met a ton of bloggers in person! It's great! People(who don't run) question meeting strangers from the internet, but once yo follow someone's blog for a while you sort of get a sense for how they are... well, that's been my experience so far! Every time I wear my Nike Women's Half Marathon t-shirt someone always askes about that race.

Pat,
We ended up with matching pairs! LOL. That was one cold day!

Juls,
It's kind of funny because you just know how someone is going to be when you follow their blogs. It's very rare that someone's blog posts don't fit their personality.

AKA Alice,
On that same run I got the low-down on this woman's divorce and it was the first time I'd ever talked to her! I kind of felt like charging her a fee for counseling... j/k Yeah, I was thrilled to see the beach, too.

I was one of those sweaty runners you hugged at RnR San Diego and I will be forever grateful. :-)
